The city and surrounding are countless sites associated with important events in the history of Scotland, frequently these sites saw a large amount of violence and human suffering. Thankfully the city of Inverness has a amazing collection of tourist attractions (and the number is continually growing). In the following paragraphs I introduce readers to 3 places to visit in Inverness Inverness Castle, Beauly Priory and Inverness Museum:
Beauly Priory
Monks, from the Valliscaulian order, set up a community at Beauly Priory in 13th century. Sadly no-one has the information to say the factual foundation date but it is usually agreed that is would have been around the year 1230. The landowner, and patron, of Beauly was Sir John Bisset, whose lands were almagamated with the Fraser’s of Lovat. Sir John Bisset and the French monks are accepted as those who originally named Beauly, derived from the French for beautiful place (beau lieu). Sadly, Beauly Priory became derelict after the Scottish Reformation and stone blocks were utilized in the building of other structures. Beauly Priory was passed into state hands in 1913 and the ruins are now cared for by the organization Historic Scotland.
Inverness Castle
Over the centuries there have been various structures on the site where you can now see Inverness Castle, as far back as 1057 there was something there. King Robert I of Scotland almost destroyed the first Inverness Castle. Today’s castle was constructed and designed , in 1836, by William Burn. The bold structure, of red sandstone, hold a prominent position high on a cliff gazing down onto the River Ness and the cathedral on the opposite side. King James I of Scotland held parliament in Inverness Castle in 1427, and instructed all the Northern Chieftains to attend. Alarmingly 3 of these chieftains were eventually condemed to death for their support of an independent sovereignty.
